April 5th, 2011 - After being the most consistent team all season, it was no surprise the defending champs would once again square off in the finals.  What is surprising, however, is that the Bullets would put up their second worst week of the season yet hoist their third Snipers Cup in four seasons.  Their opponents were the first-year Akulas, the successor of the storied Millionaires franchise.  Old versus new, with both having knocked off two SCHL pillars in the Tycoons and Kilts in the semis.  As it would turn out however, together the two finalists would put up a shocking 0.44 points per man game, in what can be classified a lacklustre Snipers Cup Finals.

The Bullets held a slight man game advantage (42-40) and were fortunate enough to only have to worry about two Phoenix (Bryzgalov and Doan) games.  After Day 2, the Bullets held a 5-0 lead and it looked like this baby could be over before it even began.  The next three days, however, would see the Bullets surrender the lead by only compiling 2 points on a whopping 15 man games.  Buoyed by 3 Mark Giordano points, the Akulas were holding a 9-7 lead.  Day 6 would see both teams combine for 9 points, handily (sadly) the most productive day of the finals.  A couple Suter points led the Bullets back in front on Day 7 and both teams sputtered into the final night.  As what came to be expected in this moribund finals, the Akulas put up another savoury bagel on the board when it mattered most allowing the Bullets ease to yet another Cup (MAF did come through to seal the deal if need be).  The final score, 20-16, left a lot of SCHL observers desiring for more and a few teams kicking themselves for not having the chance to pull off this heist.

It was only fitting that Jarome Iginla, the player who will be forever linked between these two franchises and whose trade paved the way for the Bullets to become a dynasty-in-the-making, would lead the finals in scoring with 6 points, which surely/naturally enough was the difference in this matchup.  The vet stuck it to his old team and is in line to capture his 2nd Patrick Roy award for doing so.

The Bullets once again see themselves on top of the SCHL kingdom.  Three Cups in four years (throw in this year's Prime Minister award in to boot), and with a strong fountain-of-youth core whose best years are still ahead of them, it would be no surprise if more were to follow.  When it was no longer considered possible, the Bullets can stake claim to being the SCHL's newest dynasty.

Now let the debate begin -- Bullets (2008 to 2011+) vs. Heartbreakers (1999 to 2003)?

Welcome to the SCHL's second season, the Snipers Cup post season.  The run to the Snipers Cup is always special, but this year there are two more reasons for excitement.  Firstly, this post season will mark the first time in SCHL history there will be no head-starts.  Head-starts had been around since the beginning of the SCHL.  In short, in each playoff match, the superior team was given 'head-start' points over their inferior opponent.  The thought was teams should be rewarded for their regular season and they shouldn't be a victim to NHL scheduling in the final weeks.    In the SCHL early days, the difference in wins (there were no ties then) was doubled by two and that's how many head-start points were disbursed.  In year 1, the Tycoons had a 14 point head-start over the Road Runners.  This lasted for a couple of years until it became ridiculous, as it would take a miracle to overcome these head-starts.  Over the years, the league changed the rules.  Head-starts were capped and in most recent years, head-starts were removed from the semi-finals and finals.  But it wasn't until last summer that head-starts were removed completely from the SCHL.  In reality, head-starts only helped determine a handful of matches over the years, but there was a certain mindset that came along with them.  Weaker teams had a defeatist personality because of them.  So, now with no head-starts, the SCHL is embarking on un-chartered waters, as now all teams making the dance have equitable shot to win it all.

The second reason for increased intensity for the Cup surrounds the fact a larger base will be added to the Snipers Cup.  The winner of this year's Snipers Cup will become the first team to appear on the new base.  The Snipers Cup is now full with the first 12 Champions.  I'm guessing right around now the Shrubdogs fancy themselves the favourites.

The regular season has been great to date with the addition of the new GMs amping up the SCHL's mojo, the  Bronze Division's renaissance, there has been increased parity across the board, there has been ground breaking deals, both in the off-season and during the season, and we'll have some first timers in the Spartans/Akulas/Battalion to the dance.  Couple that with there being no 'head-starts' and it should be a wild ride to the finish...I hope you've made it!

Every qualifying team has proven they can put together a stretch of wins...just hope this your stretch.

The Pre-Post Season - Week 21

Commish's Comment: In lieu of a MOW for Week 21, Kevin Ma has taken a in-depth look in the magnitude of Week 21.  Enjoy.

“A week 21 has never meant [as] much in SCHL history as this week 21.” – Blake Johnston (Week 20, pg 22, post 1)

What began with drunken festivities in Heske’s house, will end in a stress-filled week that will cause champagne to pop and for GMs to jump off the Port Mann.  There are seemingly a million races still undecided…PM is up in the air, the battle for 3rd in Gold (and the playoff spot), the battle for 2nd in Silver (and the playoff spot), and of course the battle for Bronze and the 2 Wild Card spots that will come also come from the basement.  This doesn’t even include all of the Bellamy possibilities that exist.

In respect to this great week, I have decided to write-up a little synopsis as to what each team is playing for.  I have also provided % for the likelihood of certain events occurring.  These %  are based on an algorithm that I have created that uses standard deviation of the population mean to determine the variance using simple linear regression.

In order of last to first based on the WG standings as of the end of week 21.

Assassins – To nobody’s surprise (except maybe Sean), the Assassins find themselves at the bottom of the basement. Cleary they have nothing to play for this season, however, they have been playing better as of late which bodes well heading into next season.  With so many breakout Bronze teams this year, a good finish will give the team new hope that they can make some noise next year.

Tornadoes – As it is likely that people will just skip to their own teams, and since this is my team, I’ll just refer to the comments regarding the Assassins as they apply here.  O yea, can’t wait for Malkevin to suit up.

Vanguard – Little fan fare has been made about the Vangaurd this season as they really have not had a good season at all.  However, they find themselves in the 3rd position for the Gold Division and a playoff spot that goes with it thanks to a monumental victory over the Tycoons..  A victory over the Akulas or a Gryphons loss to the Spartans and the 20th ranked WG team could be seeing a playoff spot.  Odds of reaching the playoffs: 76%

Bullies – Everything this season seemed to be an extreme hit, or, an extreme miss.  From the trading for Jay Bouwmeester to the trading of Zuccarello.  All in all I am sure they have learned a lot and had a great time this season.  However, they are destined to 5th in Gold, relegated, no chance at a playoff spot…but they can still play a serious spoiler role versus the Devils.

Battalion – After being perennial bottom feeders as the Regime, new management has been able to turn this franchise around.  Left for dead after a loss to the Tornadoes, the NYI decided to go off helping the Battalion to victories over the Bullets and Barracudas.  A win and a Shrubbies loss puts locks up the gold division.  If both teams win and the Battalion can make up 2 points in the WG race, they will also be crowned Bronze champs.  A win over the HBs guarantees them a playoff spot, a loss would require at least 2 of Devils, Swordsmen, Spartans losing or the Shrubdogs also losing and catching up the 2 WG.  That’s a whole lotta complicated, but basically, they control their own destiny.  Odds of winning bronze: 23%; Odds of reaching playoffs: 85%

Shrubdogs – After an up and down year that involved many deals around the deadline, the Shrubdogs have been howling and are tops in the Bronze division.  The situation is basically the same as the Battalion’s so I’ll spare you the details but to win Bronze, Shrubdogs will have to win and not have the Battalion win and beat them by the 2 WG points that separate them.  To get a playoff spot, a win would clinch as would 2 of the following teams losing: Spartans, Devils, Swordsmen, Battalion (provided they don’t catch up the 2 points). Shrubbies are in the driver’s seat, but you know the Assassins would love to shut them up and enrol them into DNQU.   Odds of winning bronze: 23%; Odds of reaching the playoffs: 85%

Platinum Pros – Already received early admission to DNQU, all that’s left to decide is whether or not they can outpoint the 2nd place Bronze team to stay in the Silver Division.  They will also be looking to play spoiler as a win over the Swordsmen puts them into DNQU.

Express – After such a promising first few years, this team completely collapsed this season due to injuries and guys like Vermette regressing.  Based on expectations, this would be the furthest fall from grace this season.  Still, a win will avoid relegation to Bronze so they will still be caring about their week.

Devils – After getting inevitably shitkicked by the Bullets last week with a lack of Stamkos games, the Devils are on the outside looking in. As they do not hold the tiebreaker with the Spartans, the Devils need some help.  To win the Bronze, they need a win and the Shrubdogs/Battalion/Spartans all to lose.  Just to make the postseason, they need a victory and 2 of Shrubdogs, Battalion, and Spartans to lose.  Uphill climb indeed as they face the Bullies who just knocked off the mighty Jawas.  Odds of winning Bronze: 5%; Odds of reaching the playoffs: 33%

Flash – What started with Nabokov leaving and Kovalchuk sucking has resulted in a trip to DNQU and relegation to Gold.  They can’t even play spoiler as the Tornadoes are just as out as they are.  Back to the cave.

Gryphons – Plagued by a terrible D all year, the Gryphons find themselves on the outside looking in and need help to make the playoffs.  The situation is simple, they need to beat the Spartans and the Vanguard need to lose to the Akulas to get the 3rd slot in Gold and make the playoffs.  Odds of reaching the playoffs: 24%

Goldminers – They have sewn up 2nd place in Gold and still have a good shot at Bellamying the Jawas.  They are now just jockeying for position and hopefully to get a home playoff date in round 1.  Should be a more stress-free week than for most, but, they will still want that playoff tie breaker if they can get it.

Heartbreakers – After being ridiculed for the Alfredsson deal, the Heartbreakers find themselves controlling their own destiny in the Silver Division.  A win over the Battalion and they are in, or, a Triads loss.  Also the unlikely scenario in which they lose and the Triads win but they cover the 6 point WG gap.  Still some work to do, but, the Heartbreakers are looking good for a postseason birth. Odds of making the playoffs: 63%

Triads – What could have been a great season was marred by the scheduling Gods who decided to smite the Triads as much as possible.  Despite multiple 20 point losses this year, the Triads do have a shot at 2nd in Silver and the playoff spot that goes with it.  They simply need to win and the Heartbreaks need to lose (without the HBs beating them by 6 in WG points).  Odds of making the playoffs: 37%

Jawas – The Jawas have locked up 4th in Premiere, have their playoff spot, and are now just jockeying for position and the potential for a home playoff date.  There’s also the Bellamy angle vs the Goldminers.  Still, a relatively stress-free week is in order for the Jawas this week.  Despite a season which fell below expectations, if the Canucks ever win a game 5-0 the Jawas can really steamroll teams in the playoffs.

Spartans – If someone told Pete at the beginning of the year that they would control their own destiny at the start of week 21, he would have hugged you.  If someone told Pete at the middle of the year that they have not clinched a playoff spot, he would have knocked you down a never ending pit yelling “This is Spartaaaaa”.  A season that was once so promising is now on the rocks after some tough losses.  Still, a win over the Gryphons or the Swordsmen and Devils losing and they will make their first ever postseason appearance.  Odds of making the playoffs: 64%

Akulas - Quietly has put together a phenomenal season.  Already locked up the Silver crown and a bye.  Not much to play for at all except to lock up the 3rd seed which is unlikely to make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.  Kick back with a Coke Zero Mgelly, you have the next 2 weeks off.  Well done.

Rowdy Kilts -   After dealing Brodeur, the Kilts managed to nab Jimmy Howard who has been sensational this season.  They are guaranteed a bye and a top 2 seed for the playoffs.  Still, they are battling the Bullets for the PM while facing their bitter rivals in the Johnston Tycoons this week.  The Kilts need a win and a Bullets loss to take over the top seed and win the PM award.  Odds of winning The PM: 19%

Tycoons – A shitty year by their standards and yet they are still a top 5 WG team.  A playoff spot is locked up, a bye is out of reach, so the Tycoons are just playing for seeding and home ice advantage.  However, any week that they play the Kilts is considered mammoth so there’s no doubt in my mind that GM Blake Johnston will be going for the win and not resting their players for the first week of the playoffs.

Swordsmen – What-The-Fuck?!  The 3rd place team in the WG has an unbelievable hill to climb to make the playoffs.  This is truly extraordinary and must be making GM Wade Balsille go crazy.  Not only do they need a victory this week over the Pros, but, they need to have 2 of Devils, Shrubdogs, Spartans and Battalion lose.  Will they be the highest scoring team to miss the playoffs?  Odds of winning Bronze: 2%; Odds of making the playoffs: 26%

Bullets – The Bullets are in the driver’s seat for the PM award with the Blackhawks going a staggering 5 times this week and the Barracudas being cold as ice.  A win locks up the PM as would a loss by the Kilts.  A bye is already in the cards for this Stu Ungar fan club member.  Odds of winning the PM:  81%

Barracudas – The WG leader has been ice cold as of late with the injury to Richards.  Fortunately, they have locked up a bye but have no shot at the PM anymore.  The Barracudas need to pray that they can get healthy over the next two weeks so they can be at full strength to take on their round 2 opponent.

So there you have it, all of the possible scenarios for the playoff races this week.  Despite being out of the playoff picture, I will still be tuning in to see how all of this turns out.

For the SCHL, I’m Kevin Ma.

Week 20 MOW
VS

There's two races going on in the SCHL right now, a fight for the PM and a Bronze Division rumble.  This matchup has a flavour of both.  The Kilts are battling the for the PM, and surprisingly, after  leading the WG for much of the season, the Swordsmen are handing on to the final playoff spot by the skin of their teeth.

The Kilts dusted off the Gryphons last week and are 4-1 in their last 5 and posted a solid two weeks of 23 and 26 points respectively.  The Kilts will likely have to win out and to pass the Bullets in the WG to win the PM and it's certainly possible as the Kilts hold man game advantages against the Swordsmen this week and against the Tycoons in the final week.

In contrast, the Swordsmen are sputtering along at 2-5 in their past 7 and haven't gotten over 18 points in a month.  Once the golden child of the SCHL to some, the Swordsmen are facing their first taste of SCHL adversity.  The good news for the Swordsmen is they hold the WG tie break on everyone in the Bronze Division and because both wild card teams will come from that division that's very important. They're in tough this week with inferior man games, but do host the Pros next week in what will likely decide their season.  Just noticed the Swordsmen have already left Tanguay's two points on the table from the Heritage game.

The Swordsmen are playing their most important week in their new SCHL career and the Kilts have made a career out of ruining people's seasons.

Week 19 MOW
VS

After a decent season, the Battalion went into the tank for a few weeks and put their season on the brink in a loss to the push over Tornadoes in Week 17. Left for dead, the Battalion polished off the Triads with the help from a hot Islanders team last week.  Now with their season hanging by a vein, they have a chance to dodge the dreaded DNQ against the league's defending champ.

The Bullets have rattled of four straight Ws in their quest for the division and PM.  Two points ahead of the Kilts and Barracudas for the PM need ever point possible. A tie with the Barracudas will mean they'll relinquish the PM, while the Kilts will likely lose in a WG tie break to the Bullets at the SCHL's regular season end.  It should be a wild finish for the Premier and PM crowns.

Not as glamorous, the Battalion are the sitting 5th in the tightest of all the races in the Bronze.  The Battalion are one point and a WG tie break out of the post season and have to face the Bullets, Barracudas and Heartbreakers to finish the season off...they'll need a miracle.

The Bullets once thought this week was a gimmie week in their quest to win the PM, but now are in tough.

Week 18 MOW
VS

There's so many juicy matchups this week...Kilts/Goldminers, Tycoons/Flash, Bullets/Jawas, but none bigger than the Week 18 MOW between the Spartans and the Devils.  Besides both franchises coming into the SCHL at the same time in 2006, they square for two precious points.  The Spartans, up until recently, have enjoyed a breakout season compiling more points than in any other of their 4 previous seasons.  However, they have only picked up 1 pt in their past three weeks and are coming off back to back losses.  The Devils on the other hand have polished off three straight Ws and have quietly crept back into the playoff race  and are now only 2 points behind the Spartans.

A win for the Spartans almost seals their first post season birth, but a win by the Devils ties them up with the Spartans and makes the Spartans fear of a season collapse a reality.

While keeping on eye on each other, both teams will be keeping an eye on an equally as important match in the Swordsmen vs the Shrubdogs.  With only three week left after this week, a lot of of the season hinges in the next seven days for the Bronze Division.

This expansion clash all time stands at 1-1.

Week 18 will forever be Bronzed into our memories.

Week 17 MOW
VS

Week 17 pits two original SCHL teams and two very opposite run squads against each other.  After a busy all-star weekend, the Shrubogs will strut their new team in an attempt to make a run to the post season...or bust.  In their last seven weeks the Shrubdogs are 5-2. The Gryphons on the other hand are slowly racking up Milbury votes as they sit on their hands and clunk along.  They are 1-5 in their last 6, and with their win last week they snapped a 5 week losing streak.

The Shrubdogs sit 3rd in the Bronze with 17 points and are barely clinging to a post season spot with more WG points over the Battalion.  The Gryphons are 1 pt back of the Shrubs at 16 points, however, because of the Gryphons' division, they are almost assured a post season birth...but more points and a better seed is at stake for them.

This classic Outsider Division rivalry stands at 10-8 in favour of the Gryphons.

All eyes will be on this match after the Shrubdogs busy weekend of aggressive trades and bold statements!

Week 16 MOW
VS

The Tycoons and Heartbreakers tilt in a big week 16 match.  The Tycoons are coming off a big last game win over the Barracudas last week to move within one point of the Jawas in the Premier division.  The Heartbreakers are the hottest team in the SCHL rattling off 5 straight wins (1-7 start now 6-7), which is their longest winning streak since the 2002-2002 season where they won 7 straight.  The Heartbreakers have also eclipsed 30 points three times in this streak and have three 1st places to their name.  That's a far cry from when the league was on GM Roy for his Alffy deal.  Now for the first time the Heartbreakers are sitting in a playoff spot with 14 points.  The Tycoons aren't as hot, but they have posted 3 out of their last 4 weeks with 25 points or more.

The Tycoons have decided to go with quantity over quality this week as they've started three Florida Panthers with three games for the Cats this week...and benched Selanne.  The Tycoons have a 21-15 man game advantage and that's one of the benefits to having a deep bench...you can drown teams out with man games.

All time the Tycoons are 8-2 vs the Heartbreakers, but their most notable match ever occurred in the 1999 finals as the Heartbreakers took out the top seeded Tycoons for the first ever Snipers Cup.

With only six weeks left before the post season and both storied franchises scrambling for points...it should make for an interesting short week!

Week 15 MOW
VS

Two premier teams face off in a Week 15 clash.  The Kilts are coming off two straight losses and have managed three of their last five weeks in the teens in terms of WG points.  The Jawas are unbeaten five after what can only be described as a underwhelming start to the season.  The Kilts are highly Detroit dependant, while the Jawas are all Pens and Nux with these two teams accounting for 79% of the Jawas overall points.  The Canucks and Pens go four and three times respectively this week.  The Red Wings go three times for the Kilts, however they're missing their best forward in Datsyuk to a broken wrist and Howard's status is unclear after injuring his knee last week.

The Jawas are three points back of the Kilts in the premier division so this is a 4 pt aFehr.  All time these teams have met 13 times with the Kilts holding the advantage at 8-4-1.  In week 15, these two perennially heavy weights square off for two precious premier division points!!

Week 14 MOW
VS

The MOW for Week 14 had quite a few quality choices, but only one truly stood out from the rest.  The Barracudas and Swordsmen meet up for their first ever tilt with more than a W on the line.  'Cudas are tied with the Kilts for top spot in the standings while the Swordsmen are only three points back.  In the WG the Swordsmen hold a five point lead over the Cudas for top spot.  Bellamy took a decisive decision over the Gryphons last week while the Swordsmen lost to the lowly Battalion.  Man games are almost identical.   Who is the undisputed better team?  Sit back and enjoy this rumble.

SCHL NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS FOR 2011 - December 31, 2010

I thought it would be fun to pick apart the SCHL. Just some resolutions for every GM (in their own words) pertaining to all things SCHL , a tongue in cheek look courtesy of the Shrubs.

 In alphabetical order…

Akulas:

“My resolution for 2011 is to take less time off from the MB and to make my mark in the SCHL as a whole and not just in the Movie Thread. And I’ll try not to start polls only to forget about them after every GM has voted.”

Assassins:

“I promise not to bend over for the GRU as much as I do. I’ll also refrain from pumping up my 4th– 9th forwards and giving my players cheese ball nicknames like Earth Quick and then trying to convince the SCHL that it was the work of a genius. And I’d like to wake up from this hypnotic world where Patrice Bergeron is Wayne Gretzky.  Also, I feel like I'm not updating my trade block enough.”

Barracudas:

I will recognize that I am not the smartest man in the world, let alone the SCHL and that running for SCHL valedictorian is a worthy cause even if there is no official vote.”

Battalion:

“My goal for 2011 is to get my face off the back of a milk carton and on to the MB and talk less before a game of street hockey If I’m just going to rip slappers into the cul-de-sac across from the rink.”

Bullets:

“In the 2011, I will continue to ensure the SCHL rules are written in such a way that they don't apply to me.  In addition, I will blame Sean for my lack of posting and I will ensure I continue my payments to Nathan in return for his love affair with my street hockey game."

Bullies:

"In 2011 I’d like to come to the realization that trading Joe Thornton was not in my best interest and that the SCHL MB is in fact the best way to peddle new business for work.”

Devils:

"In 2011, I will save on double AA batteries from Costco for my SCHL MB alarm clock.  I will continue to comment on how much my team sucks because that never gets old, and to always offer a voice of reason when the topic of who’s got a degree in something comes up.”

Express:

"I promise to always be a negative nancy and to continue to tell the GM’s that contribute to this pool more than myself that they need to contribute more.”

Flash:

“In 2011 I plan on always taking abuse about me not posting enough as I have no intention of posting any extra. I will also continue to draft one young buck at the start of every year that nobody has heard of and then drop that one young buck at the end of every year.”

Goldminers:

“For 2011 I’d like to enter the HOF in the builders category. I’ll continue to contribute to the SCHL and make sure everyone knows about it, and then take extra measures so that the voodoo doll of the next guy Blake wants in the SCHL works this time.”

Gryphons:

“In 2011 I hope that the Gryphons will get a chance to be the bride for once and not just a bridesmaid. I will make an extra effort to ensure that my team will not trade to better itself.  I’d also like to continue this torrid pace of 5 posts a week that I’ve been on."

Heartbreakers:

“My resolution for the year ahead is to come to the realization that people know I love my brother and referring to him in glowing light in every post that references the “old GM’s” is quite un-necessary. I also plan on trading for more old guys when my season is already lost.

Jawas:

This year I’d like to be even more witty as I take myself way too seriously. I will continue to be timely in hopes that the SCHL will acknowledge my comedic timing and give it the props that it deserves. Also, I'll un-hypnotize myself and drop Patrick O'Sullivan.”

Latino Pros:

“My resolution is to squeeze more posts into 5 mins than I currently am. I will continue to swear by quantity over quality and warn the SCHL just how good my team will be in…one more year.”

Rowdy Kilts:

“In 2011 I will continue to attempt trading my drops to know better GM’s before eventually settling on the GRU. I will try to refrain from commenting on my AHL all stars in every second post.  I will continue to try and write my own rules in an attempt to dress my 6th forward instead of my 7th ."

Shrubdogs:

“ My resolution is to continue to go for it whether it’s realistic to think so or not. I will also trade away my 1sts in what’s likely a gamble to put me over that hump probably sacrificing the future in the process. I will also continue to post on everything and remind the gallery how much I hate baseball.”

Spartans:

“This year I’d like to try the nice guy approach. I’d also like to spend more time on msn on draft day as I feel I’ve been slacking in that area.  I'll also make an effort to make sure I stop stepping on people's toes.“

Swordsmen:

“ I vow to be the best new GM money can buy.  I promise to not post for days on end or refrain from talking about recent trades and then wonder what more I can do to participate?"

Tornadoes:

“For me 2011 is all about stepping up. I’m not nearly opinionated enough and the world has no clue how deserving they are. I must not hold back this wealth of knowledge any further.”

Triads:

“This year I will insist that everyone is available for trade and then I won’t trade a single one of them. I will also post my entire roster week after week in the Weekly Roster & Changes thread when we’re not supposed to and ignore the fact all rosters are posted in the Starting Lineups column.”

Tycoons:

“In 2011 I will continue to compete for the Snipers Cup and WG and argue that it’s been a bad year. I will argue a point I am wrong about for no reason at all and claim all my points to be fact when they are not. This year is all about being more confident for me.”

Vanguard:

“ My resolution is to post less and talk quieter.  My commitment to being the next Jon will be kicked up a level. I’d also like to maintain my stranglehold on 5th in Gold and try to be more noticeable at the next SCHL street game”

That’s it kids, for all the talk about how quiet the MB is, just thought I’d pick at everyone a bit and took an afternoon aside to give it a whirl. I don’t claim it to be the best of the best, but it’s something. Happy New Years to the SCHL.

RED VICTORIOUS AGAIN!

October 5, 2010

FRANK RANKS 2010-2011 IT'S HERE!...The season is finally here!

A DRAFT DAY GOLDMINE!

I've yet to add Cam's photos, but I wanted to get a small thing up in the meantime.

This draft will go down as one of the best in SCHL's history.  The podium, the draft board, the great food and a great host.  September 25, 2010 was a great time had by all 21 GMs that attended.  The draft was kicked off in fashion with a big trade with two of the new teams. The Swordsmen and 79th Street Bullies pulled off a trade that only happens every few years.  The Bullies sent long time, and I mean original draft from 1998 long time, 79er, Joe Thornton to the Swordsmen in exchange for JVR, Kadri and moving up 6 spots to 4th overall in the 1st round.  The Swordsmen prior had been taking a lot of criticism  from the SCHL for their sit back approach and how they had not made an effort to make it THEIR team.  Well this will do the trick.  The Swordsmen weren't done there, however, as they moved up from their newly acquired 10th overall pick to secure they get Halak 7th overall.  The Swordsmen reshaped their franchise with big Joe and Halak in a matter of minutes.

The day belonged to the the Battalion and Assassins, however.  New GM, Brad Bryce made great first impression slipping on Hall's jersey in the first overall selection.  What better way to join a league to land the best young buck around?  Sean Moran of the Moran Assassins was up next and promptly took Tyler Seguin from the Boston Bruins.  After that the draft unfolded in typical SCHL fashion with loads of trades and banter.  All told on the day there were nine trades.

As previously mentioned the new teams made a splash at this year's draft.  The Hall pick with jersey in all, the big trade to start and overall they really, I think, enjoyed themselves.  Which is good because we can come off nutty at times.  The new guys definitely fit in overall.

The Spartans listened  live on speaker phone for much of the first round and were live on MSN throughout the draft.  The Express flew home from the UK and came directly to the draft.  That's commitment.

This draft will probably be known for the quality and quantity of drunk GMs.  From old GMs to new ones.  But there was nobody as drunk as Sean Moran.  In addition to a great draft a lot of the GM stuck around afterward chatting and reliving all of the action throughout the day.  It started at 3pm and ended close to 1 am.

Check out the "Post Draft" thread on the MB for more draft day chatter.

From draft '10

DRAFT DAY 2010 - THIS SATURDAY!!!

You've probably noticed the sun dropping faster and faster each day.  And it's safe to say summer is behind us and that means hockey season is almost here.  The 2010-2011 season is finally on the horizon with this weekend's draft leading the way.  For two lucky teams they're going to land a potential superstar.  This duo will join the Stamkos/Doughty and Ovechkin/Malkin duos as some of the best in the league's history.  With 22 teams, any chance to pounce on  a franchise player is huge.

This will be the SCHL's 12th season and its 12th draft, not counting the original none dynasty season in 1997-1998. Draft Day is now only single digit days away.  As the pinnacle of the SCHL, the draft has produced some of the greatest moments in league history.  My Documents, Man in the Mirror and many more.  Draft Day is the only day where teams can acquire players without the haggling process and teams can look back to THAT day where they turned their team around.  The Flash did it in the 2001 draft, the Tycoons in 2005 & 2006 and the Devils in 2008.

This draft day should be a whole new experience compared to past drafts.  There are four new GMs that will be brought into the action.  I'm not sure they know what they're getting into quite yet, but they'll get a taste of it this Saturday.  Let's just hope they've done their homework and don't spend most of their time flipping aimlessly through the McKeens.  That usually means you're screwed.  Also in this draft, it'll be the first time since the 2007 Draft teams will be able to draft any type of player with no maximum number of prospects.  Teams are free to do what they please.  This should shake up the battle grounds for players.  Hopefully we won't see any more drunk GMs and yelling at the Commish because of rules they forgot.  No drinking and GMing, Tony!

Two rules that really stand out over the summer that could impact the draft landscape are, firstly, the removal of headstarts in the post season.  Will this have any effect in how teams draft, knowing that if they can just squeak into the post season anything can happen? And secondly, the shake up of the draft lottery rules.  For the benefit of the new teams the old way of the draft lottery (IE 2005-2010) almost guaranteed the worst team got the 1st overall pick and at worst got the 2nd overall pick.  Now we've changed back to the draft lottery rules from 2001-2004 era where all DNQ teams have a shot at the top picks.  Now teams won't be so quick to suck, because in the four draft lotteries under those rules, never once did the worst team win that 1st overall pick.

Then there's the opening handshakes at the draft that crack me up.  All the slagging and personal comments are left on the MB and for 4-5 hours everyone treats everyone else in a civil way.   I wonder if Heske will leave after the draft ASAP like he usually does, or would that be weird since he lives there?  How many guys will complain it's taking too long and then leave right away to complain there's no posts on the MB?  No nervous breaks down for Paik, he lives blocks away.  Assigned seating or sit wherever you fancy?  I hope it's assigned seating.  Too many guys just sit beside their closer friends.  Yawn. And no helping!  With Ash gone, who's gonna arrive 30 min late to the actual draft?  What more exciting, the lead up to the draft or the actual draft?  So many questions to be answered!

Doors open on Draft Day at 3pm and the draft kicks off at 5pm on the nose PST (That's 8pm for you, Pete) at Heske's house in Langley.  I expect everyone to be there early.  No arm twisting, however.  Heske will provide all the details you'll need on the MB.  Bring money for grub, this isn't do what you like...it's the SCHL after all.  No swinging by McDonalds first, Sean and Daryl.

It's such an exciting day.  All 22 teams think they have a chance, so the enthusiasm is high.

I hope you've done your home work...the snipes are there for the taking...who's gonna pounce?

Say No to Bullying!
Sep 9, 2010

A lot of people are afraid to say no, that's where toughness comes into play. If you have the opportunity to bully your opponent then you have to take that chance. On the ice some threats are more serious then others. Keep looking over your shoulder there are now Bullies in the SCHL.

Today the SCHL unveiled it's newest team to the league. The 79ers are no more, I present to you the Perron Bullies. Named after their love of the Philadelphia Flyers and the Broad Street Bullies. In fact, the team name in the SCHL registry is officially the Perron 79th Street Bullies, with the "79th Street" paying homage to their roots.  "It's a great day for the SCHL" Commish Blake Johnston said at the press conference, "when you add a hockey buff and passionate poolster to the league and then give that team an identify...I think the whole league is the winner here."

PERRON BULLIES

A Form Champ Departs
August 29th, 2010

It’s the end of an era in the SCHL.  The 79ers become the third team this summer to sell their team.  It came as big shock to the league, but after plenty of thought Ashley Steier thought it was time to sell.  While it came as a shock, it wasn’t a surprise to hear that it was the 79ers who sold.  In recent years, the 79ers’ participation had declined and it became obvious selling or leaving the SCHL would be inventible.

The 79ers become the first former champion to leave the SCHL.  They won their cup in 2007 in one of the most bizarre and exciting finals.  The 79ers marched their way to the finals after bouncing the Flash and Gryphons to face the Rowdy Kilts.  During the finals, the 79ers mounted a massive lead with an 18 points lead.  Ash had begun “spending” his winnings and the Kilts were left for dead.  Never leave the Kilts for dead because they’ll come back.  The Kilts, led by Jagr, dragged themselves back into the match, so much so at one point they clawed all the way to a one point lead.  The 79ers prevailed on the final day with Sakic getting 3 points in a nail bitter to in it.  Ash was one relieved man!

Other great 79er moments include:

·     -    Ash hosting the 2002 draft.  After returning from travelling in 2002, the 79ers hosted one of the best drafts of all time in September 2002.  It was a beauty sunny day with a great spread.

·     -     The 79ers were a monster Lindros fan taking him 5th overall in 1998 and sniping Joe Thornton 245th overall (13th round) in the inaugural draft.

·         The controversial Crosby Lottery.

·         His power point presentation at the 2003 draft, unveiling his and the Kilts new logos.

·         And for me personally, Ash and I talking SCHL and checking stats in Australia in 2000.  I’ll never forget those days.

The 79ers were a late addition to the SCHL originally.  Originally it was planned that the SCHL would include 18 teams, but after some chats (notably one on the way up to the Okanagan) it was decided to include two more teams into the league.  One of which was the 79ers, the other the Heartbreakers.  Ash was instrumental in getting the Assassins and Barracudas teams in the league and we can’t forget the Tornadoes are a direct result of the 79ers involvement in the SCHL.

The 79ers leave the SCHL with 1 Division Crown, 2 Anchor Awards, 1 Jagr Winner, 1 Lidstrom and 1 Patrick Roy winner and of course, with one Snipers Cup ring.  His name will forever been engraved into the SCHL.

The league won’t be the same without someone showing up to the draft 40 min late.

Expect to continue to see Ash at SCHL event in the future!

Thanks for everything, Ash!

Something's Lurking
July 23, 2010

Read below if you haven't.  Now moving on.  Mike Kelly takes over as the new owner of the Millionaires franchise.  I think it was all agreed the name 'Millionaires' was a tired name in need of a face lift.  Well with a new owner comes a new name and a new era.  The scene now moves to the cold ocean waters near Russia.  I present to you the SCHL's newest team the: Kelly...............HERE

Million Dollar Dream
July 22, 2010

It's o.n. now, but an official farewell was never issued to former GM Rick Barrett.  The news, of course, is the sale of the Millionaires to Mike Kelly.  Mgelly, a former work colleague of Rick, is an experienced fantasy GM in another league and has been longing to be in the SCHL for some time.

Rick Barrett leaves after 11 seasons in the SCHL.  He took over midstream in the inaugural season back in 1998 for John Haskayne of the Haskayne Cruisers.  After hearing about the league and its beginnings in 1998, Rick wanted a team.  Rick guided the team to a division crown in 2004 and to the Most Improved Team last season.  The Millionaires were a top team for much of their time in the league, but could not seem to get past the second round.  Their best season points wise was back in 2003 and 2006 finishing 6th in the WG race.  They were flanked by some of the greatest to ever be in the SCHL, most notably Forsberg, Iginla and Alfredsson.  Forsberg at his peak was unstoppable and probably the best player I've personally ever seen at his height.

Rick brought a lot of personality to the SCHL.  He wasn't like the rest of us, being a tad bit older, but he had his way about him.  You could feel Rick's presence on draft day.  Some moments I thought of whilst writing this...Rick's trade talks in 2006.  Everyone and their dog lined up to get a piece of Rick who owned that next pick, which would have been Wolski.  Sean eventually made the trade with Rick to acquire the pick and took Bernier.  Classic.

Rick was infamous for no avatar, posting article links without posting his opinion and his long, drawn out, go nowhere, trade talks.  He was always on top of the pulse in the SCHL and always threw his two cents in on rules discussions and what not.

He's also known as the guy who moved Iginla for table scraps at the 2007 draft.  A classic scene.  You could smell a dead body in the room after that deal was announced.  The quiet looks, Rick's red face.  Iginla went on to win the Roy that year for the Bullets.

Probably my favourite moment for a laugh in the SCHL, maybe second to the Maxi-pad pick in 1999, was Rick's 1st round pick in 1999.  Like I said, Rick took over this team midstream in 1998-1999 season, so this was his first draft.   "With the 11th overall pick the Millionaires select Mikhael Pivonka."  Fucking classic.  Everyone was laughing and this is the first words uttered from this new GM's mouth.  For all the new to hockey GMs around here, Pivonka was once a decent player for a short period with the Caps.  But in 1999 his best days were behind him and he wasn't signed to an NHL team.  I'd be like the Swordsmen today picking Demitra 11th overall.  I bet Rick was using his 1995 McKeens.

Another classic moment in SCHL history were the Millionaire defeating the Stunners in the opening around of the inaugural season.  The much superior Stunners lost because the Dallas Stars played four times (Millionaires had Zubov, Hull and Belfour).  Jared emails me over this essay of a rant telling me why this is BS etc...another beauty memory.

Rick's involvement and addition to the SCHL didn't go unnoticed and in 2002 he won the Commish's Choice award.

But what he'll be most known for, "Time I body checked this guy and sent him flying at least 8 feet in the air backwards."

Rick will be missed, he was a beauty, but we understand that life beckons sometimes and hockey pools aren't at the top of everyone's priority lists.

Leader of the Paik
June 27, 2010

The 3rd Annual 5th Round Open was a classic and it came down to a magical moment on 18.

It was a cloudy day, with periods of rain on and off, as the five groups faced the elements June 27, 2010 at Surrey Golf Course.  "Our grips were slippery, out there.  I had trouble with the grips and had to club up a few times out there." Captain, Brian Denroche said strolling to the historic club house after the round.  "No excuses tho, we all had to face those harsh conditions.  It was very British Open like out.  I had to step back from a few putts because of the wind."

The groups teed off at 10:18 with Team Bullets leading the way.  They went out and held it together posting a -1 after nine holes and more importantly all the golfers had at least two drives in at the turn.  After that, however, it was a lacklustre back nine with no birds or bogey.  They finished up -1.  Captain Wilson was rattled and they couldn't mount the charge they needed for the win.  "I thought we might have a chance.  It's always good to be close to par, especially out in those conditions." Wilson comments.

As the defending champ, Nathan Bellamy decided their group would tee off last.  Unfortunately, there was no magic in that.  "Apart from the tee, nothing about our game was good." Ma said afterward.  "I mean we took more of my drives than we actually had to.  That's never a good thing."  They stumbled their wait into the house at 3 over par, with their only birdie coming on the par 4 5th hole, with Franson hitting the flag stick with chip shot.  "Nothing was going.  It happened in golf."Captain Bellamy said.

Brian led his troops off second as the somewhat Team Red battled the heavy air around the 18 holes and posted a +1 score.  Team Denroche quickly changed its name to Team Par, despite an error on hole 4.  A poor jump of a gun decision by the team led to a crucial bogey on a par 5.  Bogeying par 5s are the kiss of death in a Texas scramble.  The team wanting to park under a tree lead to a near impossible shot to the green led to their demise.  "We were able to pull it together with a magical birdie when we had our cart stolen by some grumpy old course marshall" - Denroche.

The final two groups led by Jamie Wahl and Blake Johnston provided the fire works for the tourney.  The Tycoons held the one shot lead at the turn after picking up birds at holes 4 and 7 on the front.  Johnston knocked a Sampson drive stiff with a nine iron and the team capitalized.  "Half the holes were a stressful scramble with a par save or we were coming up weak sauce on a birdie putt.  It felt like we birdied every hole with emotions out there.  We either made an actual birdie or had a huge par save.  I'm really impressed when I look at the card and see only one boge."  - Johnston.

At the turn, Team Devils were even and came on with birdie on the short par 4 14 and with Wahl throwing his pitch tight they got a bird on 17.  With the groups partially aware of their scores, Team Devils mowed down the hard 560+ par 5 18 and took a respectable par.  "There's was nothing else we could do...we were in the house with the tourney lead."- Dedrick.

Team Sage, as they were known (aka Team Tycoons) birdie the tough hole 15.  MGelly's tee shot led to Sampson's best shot of the day...180 yard up hill 4 iron within 12 feet.  MGelly was the first to putt and drained it...the course echoed with excitement.  They took the lead at that point, but minutes a Wade, Wahl combo for Team Devils tied it one more at -2.

Sampson had a tremendous round with the most drives taken for Team Sage.  The Captain's approaches and chips were a thing of art that kept the train on the rails when it appeared to tip and Mgelly had a moments of his own.  The final member, Paik, for 17 holes was a bystander and just happy to get his three drives in and not leaving it till the 18th hole like last year and we all know how that went. "That was big.  Getting that last drive in...phew." - Paik.  Besides those three drives, not one was taken from the timid Tommy....that was until the 18th.

With the score all knotted up at -2, Team Sage came to 18th, with only MGelly to drive.  He was one driveshort and needless to say he was driving like a drunk man all day.  MGelly stepped up and ripped it 230 out there...a thing of beauty.  The Captain took out the trusty hybrid and hit one up there another 230 within 115 yards of the long and challenging par 5, 18th green.  "The annoying peanut gallery was watching...we had to come up big." Daryl Sampson noted before they shot. "We got together as a group, said we can do this and Paik was first to act."  Paik always led the group and this time it wasn't your usual topper for 10 feet, he threw it up there and stuck to 12 feet on a uphill green.  "I couldn't believe it...I just wanted to get it in the air...and then that.  Wow" Paik said.  No one got closer and Paik's shot put the team with one putt away from the title....it was a 12-15 foot downhill side breaker....Paik was first to act:

And then the Green Team hoisted the Norman Jug on a rainy, cloudy, Scottish like day.  Paik's winning putt would be still rolling had the hole not been in the way.  That's sweet redemption after last year's Top Heard Round the World.

Hollywood couldn't have written a better script.

It's been a long time since we've seen a Coyote Corner, a presentation of Griffin Mitchell, but it's here again.  It's top 10 time!

Top 10 SCHL Prospects GM’s are waiting to bust out

A mix of the top prospects GM’s can’t wait to see and the ones that need to get moving off that farm already.

10.  Jordan Schroeder (Express)- The 7th overall pick in the SCHL draft had a bit of an off year in college but redeemed himself with a strong performance at the world juniors for the gold winning Yanks.  Even more impressive however was his ability to step into the world of the AHL and not miss a beat with the Moose.  That strong performance may have fast tracked himself to the big time as there will be holes to fill with the expected departures of the likes of Pavol Demitra, Kyle Welwood, and Ryan Johnson.

9. John Carlson (Flash)- If the ’09 draft will be remembered for anything it will be for the quality of defenseman drafted.  Tyler Myers, Hedman, Del Zotto to name a few… you can add Carlson's name to the mix.   If you believe some analysts he has a chance to be better then Mike Green in a few years.   I’m not too sure about that evaluation, none the less he has looked good at every level thus far and was a bright spot in the Caps brief playoff appearance.  Jon always knew JC was a jew.

8. Jonathan Bernier (Jawas)- Cam made the trade to get his guy, has patiently farmed him and now is looking to reap the rewards.   Bernier had a dominating performance in the AHL followed by an impressive showing in a brief call-up.  Ready than ever to make the next step but may have to bide time on the bench behind starter Jon Quick.  It wouldn’t surprise me in the least though if by season’s end he ends up the starter.  Call it Rask part 2.

8.  Nazem Kadri (Swordsmen)- The prince of Persia wowed the crowd in an impressive preseason performance for the Buds but was wisely sent back to junior.   Kadri needs to gain some pounds to survive a full NHL campaign but will be given every opportunity to make the big club next year.  Leaf fans could be in for the makings of a dynamic duo if paired up with the equally speedy Kessel.  New GM Smith, has to be licking his chops at this gem.  Not bad for $900!

7.  Angelo Esposito (Millionaires/Aces)- Had to take a quick look at the Millie’s roster to see if he was still there.  I have a feeling he’ll be on that roster for a while to come as Rick waits patiently to get something….anything in return for his much maligned trade in ‘07 of Jarome Iginla to the Bullets that changed the course of history in the SCHL.   A wasted, injury plagued year for Espo has seen him freefall to 7th on Atlanta’s prospect list (per.THN ranking).   Is time running out?   - I wonder what Meglly thinks?

6. Cody Hodgson (Tornadoes) - As with Schroeder, will have a legitimate shot at making a Canuck team with holes to fill.  Was expected by many to already be up but got sidetracked with a back injury in training camp last year.  Now a year behind in development the question marks are starting to emerge.  Is he injury prone?  Does he lack the speed, size and strength to be effective in the NHL?

4. Nikita Filatov (Spartans)- Resembling more La Femme Nikita than the Nikita that was supposed to win the Calder last year.    Clashed early on with coach Hitchcock which prompted his exodus to the KHL where he excelled.   Will start with a clean slate under a new coach to start next season but will still be a concern to flee to the KHL at a moment’s notice when things aren’t going his way.   Zherdev 2.0?

3. Alex Pietrangelo (Assassins) - One of the big 3 of the 2008 and while Doughty and Bogosian are full time regulars (along with later draftees Karlsson and Myers) Pietrangelo has been brought along at a slower pace.   If you put much stock into what HF and THN is saying than you’ll be jacked about his potential because both of them have him currently ranked no.1 in their top 50 compilation.  Will join his 08 draft buddies this fall.

2.  Jordan Eberle (Assassins) - No that’s not a vuvuzela you’re hearing .  As one generation passes by with the hollow sounds of “Kaberlaaah’” a new era ushers in with the sound of “Eberlaaah”.  Had an outstanding junior season and was his typical clutch self at the world juniors.  Called by many the most NHL ready of the top prospects, his emergence would be a welcome sight for the Assassins to complement other bookends in Steve Mason and Drew Doughty.  A real bright spot on the Assassins.

1. Kyle Turris (Regime) - Break out the history books and you’ll find once upon a time at a draft hosted by the departed Tarpan, Kyle Turris was drafted no.1 overall by some Klann fellow.  Yep seems like a long time ago and we’re still waiting on that no.1 pick to make the show.   Now with his 3rd GM he’s lucky to be on a team with nothing but time on its hands.    I think you can flush away all that Yzerman/Sakic  talk but he’s not quite a Patrick Stefan yet either…look for a solid career perhaps somewhere in the middle.

Honorable Mentions:  Brayden Schenn, MPS,  Lars Eller,  Mikkael Boedker, Ryan Ellis

Top 10 SCHL’ers in need of a change in scenery

Even better then moving one of your struggling players is when an NHL GM does it for you!  Whether it’s a veteran like Dan Boyle or a struggling youngster like Antoine Vermette, a change of scenery can sometimes do wonders.  Here’s a list of guys could use a change…

10. Patrick O’Sullivan (Jawas) -  After a promising  sophomore season of 53 pts Patty O’ pulled the diva act and began as a holdout the next season which has seem to derailed his progress more than anything.   His exile to Edmonton has not panned out, despite ample opportunities to shine it’s been Joffrey Lupul all over again.  Cornerston'd!

Prediction: Minnesota Wild

The Wild (who drafted O’Sullivan) could use some offensive punch up front.  Adding a shooter like O could make for a good complement to the playmaking Mikko Koivu.

9. Vinny Lecavalier (Vanguard) - From the face of the franchise to second fiddle last year as Stamkos took the step up to top line status.  New GM Stevie Y (who reportedly is not the biggest Vinny fan) can make his stamp if he can find a taker for Vin and his long term contract and get some decent assets in return.

Prediction: New York Rangers

In a conference full of big time centers the Rangers are severely lacking in one to match up with their rivals.  If they can move around a few players combined with the cap up 2 mill, adding a Lecavalier to build around as he enters his 30’s may make some sense.   Perhaps reminiscent of the way they built around Jagr a small time ago.  Time to put on my Nostradamus hat… Lecavalier for Chris Drury (a shorter term big contract) Evy Grachev, and Bob Sanguetti….book it!

8. Sheldon Souray (Tycoons) - A guarantee goner in Edmonton with their rebuilding mode and his recent trade request… let the speculation begin!  As per with Souray he can bring a cannon shot to add to your powerplay but comes with the usual injury concerns as well.

Prediction: San Jose Sharks

I initially had the Devils down as a team that would be a good fit for Sheldon but with his penchant for playing on the west coast San Jose may be the team.   With Rob Blake’s recent retirement they will be in the market for a veteran defenseman who would make an already scary powerplay even more fearsome.

7. Carey Price (Barracudas) -  After a successful rookie season has slowly regressed to the point of being the no.2 guy in Montreal after being outplayed by Jaroslav Halak.  Montreal now has a big decision on their hands as both are RFA’s and will command raises.  Look for them to go with Halak especially after their magical playoff run behind him this past spring.  Still an immense talent, Price in my mind could fetch a big haul on the open market despite there being a wealth of goalies on the market.

Prediction: …. ehhh never mind.

6. Alexander Frolov (Vanguard) - Began a career in 2002 that continued to trend upwards to a career high in 2007 but has regressed the other way ever since.  If ever there were a guy in need of a move it’s Fro.  Coach Terry Murray continues to bounce him around on the lineup, on a scoring line one night, on the checking line the next.

Prediction: Anaheim Ducks

As with most Russian free agents a threat to head to the KHL.  A weak crop of FA forwards however should work in his favour as there should be no shortage of suitors.  Reportedly has an affinity for the California lifestyle so a move down the road in Anaheim would make a lot of sense.   Anaheim will have some holes to fill at forward if as expected they lose Selanne and Koivu.

5. Jason Spezza (Shrubdogs) -  From the Frandogg himself and I quote  “Kinda wouldnt mind a fresh start for my franchise player. That being said a move to a shat team would really piss me off. I don’t expect him to be traded but ya never know. Something gets rumored about long enough it usually inevitably happens. I do know this much, Sens fans are gonna regret it when he's gone. Have fun with your third tier/fading stars Ottawa.”

Prediction: Columbus Blue Jackets This is the rumored team and they do have attractive assets to dangle including the 4th overall pick in next year’s draft.  Could the Jackets finally nab themselves a quality no.1 center for Rick Nash?

4. Kris (or chris?) Versteeg (Platinum Pros) - Steeger may seem to be an odd choice on this list for a guy who just won a Stanley Cup.  The reality however for the Hawks is that they will be in for some hard decisions on which players to bring back as they will feel the cap crunch.  As a result the versatile winger with the 3 mill cap hit may be one of the ones to go.  Career wise it may be the best move for Versteeg as he now plays more of a secondary role with the talented group they have in Chicago.

Prediction: Pittsburgh Penguins

One of their top wingers is currently old man Guerin which tells you all you need to know about the winger situation in Pittsburgh.  Both the Russians Ponikarovsky and Fedotenko will be gone leaving more holes to fill.  A decent draft pick or two should be the price to get Versteeg who would have to be jacked for a chance to play with Malkin or Sid.

3. Nathan Horton (Barracudas) - For the majority of Horton’s career after being taken 3rd overall in the 2003 draft, he has largely been a mystery wrapped in a riddle.   He’s been blessed with the size and tools to be an elite center but so far only able to show that type of ability at small stretches at a time.  Perhaps a move away from the beaches of Florida where hockey is a passing thought could be the fire needed to light his ass.

Prediction: Toronto Maple Leafs

No bigger stage for hockey than in the center of the universe.   Horton could mesh well with a young group of underachievers with something to prove.   With Florida unlikely interested in a Tomas Kaberle perhaps a 3 way trade could occur to make this deal happen.

2. Tomas Kaberle (Swordsmen) - Kaberlaaa had a very solid campaign netting just under the 50 pt mark with the sad sack Leafs.  The prevailing wisdom is that he could top those numbers by a large margin if he gets traded to a real contender.  While things don’t  always tend to work out that way one still can’t help be tantalized by what he could do running the point with a good team in need of a point man like the New Jersey Devils or the Colorado Avalanche.

Prediction:  New Jersey Devils

They are the name most rumored for a possible destination and it makes a ton of sense.  It’s no fluke they haven’t had a lick of playoff success since the departures of Scott Niedermeyer and Brian Rafalski.  A patchwork D isn’t going to get it done… Kaberle may be the missing ingredient for a team that is strong up front and with a hall of famer in net.

1. Ilya Kovalchuk (Flash) - The name Jaques Lemaire is not something any poolie wants to hear associated with one of his players unless it’s your goalie.  Although Ilya was good in New Jersey I think it’s say to say his creativity was stifled a bit playing on a second line with a defensive club.  Has the ability to be elite but it remains to be seen if he can play at that level on a winner which is why I say he’ll be back in the NHL next year.   Hasn’t had a dynamite center since the days of Marc Savard in Hotlanta, hopefully for the Flash he’ll be eyeing a team that has one.

Prediction: LA Kings

KHL rumors abound but Kovy has something to prove in the NHL and what better team to do it with than the Kings?  One of the fastest rising teams in the league, his addition could take them to the next level to top contender status.   Oh and about those KHL rumors…freezing cold tundra’s while riding buses in Russia or the sunny beaches of California?  Hmmnn tough one.

Top 10 SCHL Player values enhanced by the Playoffs

Will they end up more Johnny Bucyk or Johnny Druce?  Regardless these 10 guys have their values at an all-time high thanks to a great playoffs.  Their GM’s will now have to decide if it’s time to sell high or stand pat

10. David Bolland (Regime) - The bulldog overcame a serious back injury and got his game on track in perfect cohesion with the Blackhawks cup run.  With his role increased, he stymied the likes of  Henrik Sedin and Joe Thornton with his tenacious defense.  More importantly to his owner Denroche was his ability to contribute offensively with 16pts in 22 games.  The same total he had in the regular season in almost twice the amount of games.  A regular on the Regime trade block, surely he deserves a roster spot on the lightweight Regime roster now.

9. Peter Regin (Rowdy Kilts) - The SCHL has now entered a new era of Regin-omics so you can expect every number this guy puts forth to be trumpeted by his overzealous GM.    In his defense however, maybe there is something here to the hype as Regin was one of the few standouts for the Sens before bowing out to the Penguins.  Even more impressively he followed that up with a dominating performance in the worlds with a couple youtube worthy goals to boot.   Now whether that will translate into SCHL success next year remains to be seen but one thing we can count it is that we will be sure to hear about it if it happens.

8. Scott Hartnell (Barracudas) - After a mediocre year even by his standards a funny thing happened on the way to the Wachovia center this spring.  The ginger mop haired Hartnell conjured up images of Bobby Clarke with his heart, hustle and most surprisingly, offensive touch.   An annual borderline drop for the ‘Cudas looked to finally be re-entering the draft pool this year but with his great play he may again have locked himself that 12th spot.

7. Mike Cammalleri (Goldminers) - Think they miss him in Calgary?  One of the worst moves in recent memory had to be the addition of Olli Jokinen by the Flames causing the subtraction of a serious sniper in Cammy.  A bit of a subpar regular season was made up in spades as he turned up the heat for Montreal’s playoff run becoming their most important player after Jaro Halak.  Had a neat and tidy 19 points with an NHL leading 13 goals… we’ll ignore the -6 plus/minus.

6. Jonathan Toews (Bullets) - As some dude named Hawthorne once said “teams are always rising and falling in the SCHL” and the same goes for its players with none rising higher than Sir Jonathan Toews.  Although his regular season totals are a bit underwhelming you may recall a certain hit he took by one Willie Mitchell that sidetracked his season somewhat.  When it came to crunch time though, whether it was his emergence as Canada’s best all around forward during the Olympics or his Conn Smythe turn in his cup run there’s no doubt Toews has now risen to the level of a superstar.

5. Joe Pavelski (Goldminers) - How’s that old Heske saying go?  Turning flour into dough never gets old or something like that.  Anyways he may be seeing his share of dough soon if he turns out more players like this guy.  The best playoff showing by a Pavel since Bure 94, little Joe was easily the team’s best forward the first couple rounds outplaying the big 3.  Look for him to play an even bigger role next season with the expected departure of Patty Marleau.

4. PK Subban (Heartbreakers) - The straw that broke the Tarpans back.  PK came into a pressure packed situation as a replacement for Andrei Markov during the playoffs and acquitted himself quite well.  Not only did he provide solid minutes for the club he dazzled the crowd with his daring rushes while doing it.  Of course he had his mistakes as well which could well give you a glimpse as to what kind of D-man he’s going to be, your classic high risk/high reward d-man that poolies love to have.   One of the Calder favorites going forth into next season.

3. Claude Giroux (Gryphons) - Judging from the comments on the board Giroux sounds like an oft requested player for the Gryphons when it comes to trade talk.  You’ll have a easier time squeezing water out of a stone than getting Paik to let go of one of his up and coming young bucks.  Especially coming off the playoffs he just had where he put up 21pts in 23 games and was a consistent threat during the run.  Next step for him will be to show that same consistency throughout an 82 game season.

2. Daniel Briere (Rowdy Kilts) - Who saw this one coming?   Briere took full advantage of to injuries to Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne gaining a top line role and never looked back.  His 30 points led the league in playoff scoring and erased any doubt that he can still be a great player when healthy and confident.   At the center of a few controversial SCHL trades during his time, his latest one with him and Brent Burns for Louie Ericsson is starting to look more lopsided than ever.

1.Ville Leino (Heartbreakers) - Jay Leino wins again!  Had the hype early on and that was shown with his 9th overall selection by the Millies only to end up as a castoff to the Heartbreakers who until recently had him penciled as a for sure drop.  Ville revived his career with an amazing playoff run that saw him break the NHL rookie record for points with his 21.  For a guy that went from one extreme to the other it will be interesting to see if his great play carries over into next year or if he joins the flash in the pan club with the likes of Chris Kontos and John Druce.  That damn Ville Leino!

For the SCHL, I'm Griffin Mitchell

The King has Left the Building
June 9, 2010

Trades like this only come up every few years and they're front page worthy.  After 11 years as a Rowdy Kilt, Martin Brodeur, a fantasy wet dream, has been traded to the Shrubdogs.  This is a coming home of sorts for Brodeur, who started his career in the ashtrix league from 97 to 98 as a Shrubdog.  The Kilts send Brodeur to the Shrubs for the 8th overall and 31st overall in the 2010 draft.  Prior to the deal the Kilts only had two fourth round picks in this coming draft.  This deal doubles their picks and allows for an extra protection spot.

The Shrubdogs have been searching for a starting goalie for some time and with last year's struggles this solidifies that position for the time being.  The rub here, however, is how long will Brodeur continue to play for?  The Shrubs are hoping it's long enough to bridge the gap for Markstrom to become a NHL starter.  It's quite the price to pay for the Shrubdogs, who gave up what would be their highest draft pick since 2006, but now they've got to be the run-a-way favourties to win the Bronze Division and it could propel them into the top 5 of the SCHL.  Moreover, this trade makes the Shrubs consistent with their go forward policy of not trading St. Louis.

"This was the easiest trade our organization has ever made.  We've had goaltending issues for ages.  We have all the faith in the world that Marty has at least two and maybe three dominant years left and he'll be a perfect mentor for Markstrom.  Were excited to add 100pts to our line-up." said GM Franson.

This is more than just a trade for the Kilts.  This marks the end of an era.  For years Brodeur has terrorized the league as a Kilt and every night he was/is a threat to get a shutout. "It's going to be weird to not cheer for New Jersey."  remarked GM Rattray at the Kilts charity golf tournament held in Glasgow. "I thought this day would never come.  It's upsetting, but we felt the Kilts pride themselves on having the nuts to make the big move and do what's best for business."  Brodeur isn't the best goalie in the SCHL,  he's simply been the best player in the SCHL's history.  He's amassed 440 wins and 78 shutouts for the Kilts over his time on their squad.  Marty lead the Kilts to piles of wins, 6 Brodeur awards, 4 WGs and 1 Snipers Cup championship.

"I've been dreaming of this day since 1998.  I've tried to change rules, lost some hair and have high blood pressure of this man. But now that it's here, I've gotta say it's sad.  The Kilts and Brodeur are synonymous." Tycoons GM Blake Johnston said on his way to the first tee at the Kilts charity tourney.  "Personally... I'da ridden him into the sunset.  It's kind of fitting he's traded on my birthday.  I've been waiting for a while to see the Kilts Brodeur-less.  Now that it's here...I've gotta say I'm sad. Tycoon Rowdy Kilt rumbles just won't be the same.  Be careful what you wish for, eh?"

Anyway you slice it, the Kilts lose this deal.  You just can't replace a guy like Brodeur, despite the great picks in return.  But it was time, the Kilts in the past three years have failed to put any pressure on the top teams and this is just a signal that they're reorganizing their team.  This truly ends an era.  The only trade ever to compete would be the Jagr deal, but this surpasses that.

A shook up GM Rattray went on to remark: "Marty has affected so many relationships with loved ones over the years.  I can remember being 21 years old and having a 3 month old daughter, laying on my bed with the satellite, watching NJ games with my Brodeur mini helmet.  Endless trots, going out for dinners and trying to hold conversations when the only thing on my mind was if Marty was going to hold the fort after having two shutout periods...and if he did hold on for the bagel, more often than not it was a guarantee changing the rules discuss coming...because of all the shutouts he got...all the cup finals and playoff game I watched over the years cheering for NJ.

I never thought I'd have a another favourite player other than Mario, especially a goalie, a goalie?  Never having to stress about an injury to Marty, or if he was starting in goal.

Before the rules got changed and they put the trapezoid in so the goalies couldn't play it, I'd love when NJ would be up two goals, or even one with the other teams goalie pulled...Marty would come out every single time they dumped it, and only one thing on his mind was scoring an empty net goal.  I remember on a few occasions he just missed, giving me a heart attack in the process.

Also, I know he's going to good hands on the Shrubbies.  If I was to deal him to anyone it'd be Adam as he first hoisted the asterisk cup in the beginning.

What else can I say about this man...four WG's, one Snipers Cup, division titles, PM's, a trophy named after him"  Rattray pauses to collect him self, "and a good friend."

It's going to be a strange world going forward.  For 11 years Brodeur has stood between the pipes for the Kilts.

He's simply the King.

First X-Annual SCHL Street Hockey Classic
May 30, 2010

The 1st Annual SCHL Street Hockey Classic got underway this morning and by all accounts was an overwhelming success. The day reeked of competition and for 17 GM’s and one Tyson Rattray it definitely lived up to the hype. Last night’s sleep was hardly sound for any of us, but low and behold come morning the streets were dry and the forecast had turned for the better and for 6+ hours X-mas was upon us.

As promised Platinum Pros GM Daryl Sampson was the first member of Team Rowdy Kilts to arrive at historic Old Yale Park and as expected, he ran his drills alone. But with  the help of Assassins GM Sean Moran and Shrubdogs GM Adam Franson, the time proved valuable as the nets were prepped for action.

The puck dropped on the day at approx. 11:05 am. Team Express took it to Team Rowdy Kilts early building a commanding lead in Game 1 but the resilient Rowdy Kilts battled back from two, two goal deficits and took game 1 7-6.

Game 2 was all Team Express and on a strong game from Bullets GM Lorne Wilson and the sudden inspired play of last minute insertion, Goldminers GM  Paul Martin, err Ryan Hesketh the series was squared. Heartbreakers GM Tony Roy was a big minutes eater and for a guy that dusted off his stick for the first time in 20 years, he was every bit the team player.  The upstart Express battled back and took the second game in the series convincingly. 7-4.

Game 3 we really started to see both goaltenders emerge. Express keeper and Triads GM Dave Lee must have rode in on a stagecoach because he was robbing the Kilts at every turn. Kilts keeper Tyson Rattray was equally impressive stymieing the Express on every opportunity but the strong positional play and continuous barrage of shots from the Express proved to be too much as they prevailed once again 7-4 taking the 2-1 series lead.

The 4th game in the series proved to be the best game of the day. It really was a tale of 2, maybe even 3 games. The Kilts rallied around the scoring of Kilts GM and Captain Tanner Rattray and Pros GM Daryl Sampson and rode the strong defensive play of Devils GM Steve Dedrick to open up a can early on the Express building a 4-1 lead before the game was even ten minutes old. Then for a 3 min stretch of magic (yes 3 min), the Sedin sisters took over. Adam Franson and Tycoons GM Blake Johnston combined for 4 goals in the blink of an eye and the Express carried the 5-4 lead, needing two for the win. In a TSN turning point GM Dedrick laid into his team “Pass me the fuckin ball when Im open”  he screamed and this proved to be a rallying cry that did not fall on deaf ears. Gryphons GM Ryan Paik proved to be a pleasant surprise on the day and sparked the Kilts to the comeback win as they scored 3 unanswered goals of their own taking the contest 7-5 and tying the series at 2 games a piece.

With the series tied at 2, Game 5 was make or break time for the GM’s. This was definitely the longest game of the day. Both squads traded goals and injuries started to take their toll, GM Rattray played limited mins as his groin started to hinder his contribution. Luckily for the Kilts, Flash GM Jon Grossman was up for the task. A strong two way player GM Grossman kept Team Rowdy Kilts in it but it wasn’t nearly enough. Potential Snipe of the Draft Barracudas GM Nathan Bellamy had a strong stretch of games late and proved invaluable with his clutch tallys. The game remained a 6-4 lead for the Express for an eternity. Keeper Rattray was lights out.  Express GM and team Captain Derek Day was a beast on the blue line all day and particularly impressive in this outing. Timely pinching and a quick stick proved to be the undoing for the Kilts and when GM Franson went roof daddy over the glove hand of goalie Rattray to seal the deal on game 5, it broke the hearts of the Kilts.  Express prevail 7-4 and take their second series lead into game 6.

Game 6 brought a valiant effort from the Kilts, but without their captain and with really only the efforts of 3 players, there was just no chance at forcing the 7th and deciding game. Tornadoes GM Kevin Ma had chance after chance, opportunity after opportunity and every time Express keeper Lee shut the door. “No way were playing a 7th game” Lee was heard saying. Team Express took the 6th and what proved to be deciding game with ease, sealing up the first ever SCHL Street Hockey Classic  with a 7-2 mudholing and a 4-2 series win.

So many standouts this afternoon, everyone deserves a lot of credit for their efforts and Lady Byng worthy play just another feather in the cap of the Snipers Cup Hockey League. For what's sure to be a fantastic new tradition for the SCHL, you really couldn’t have asked for more.

For the SCHL, Im Adam Franson

Winds of Change
May 29, 2010
Established in 2004 after the Barbour Exodus, the Tornadoes were run by young GM Kevin Ma.  Perhaps showing his age, Ma unveiled a cartoon-esque Tornado with big eyes and a hockey stick.  Six years later and only 1 Division Title and 1 Snipe of the Draft to his name, an older, more mature GM is set to unveil a new, crisper looking logo.

“I thought it was time to move on from the childish original logo and move to a sleeker design.  I believe it is time for the Tornadoes as a team to start moving forward, and this new logo symbolizes the needed transformation from young and enthusiastic to older and consistent,” said GM Kevin Ma during his speech at the unveiling.

When asked how the new logo came about, Ma had this to say, “I came up with the concept, but it was new GM Wade Balsille that turned my idea into a reality and I appreciate his efforts,” while adding “If I knew he would help with my new logo I may have been a yes to expansion.”

Production of the new jerseys are already underway and will be available on July 1st.  Luongo and Bogosian jerseys, the two most popular Tornadoes, are already in high demand and line-ups are expected across all retail outlet stores.

Welcome the Smith Swordsmen
May 26, 2010
As the tears dry from the departure of the Tarpan Horses, it's time to turn our focus to the incoming GM and his team.  Mr. Wade Smith enters the SCHL with his patent name, the Smith Swordsmen.  Smith, short for blacksmith, is a person who creates objects from iron or steel by smiting black metal, often creating swords.

After finishing no greater than 17th in the past three seasons, the work is cut out for this new comer, but the potential is there.  The Swordsmen take over a roster full of young bucks such as Mike Richards, David Krejci, Peter Mueller, JVR, Nazem Kadri and Shea Weber.  While the pieces in place are left by the teams predecessor, GM Smith can quickly put his stamp on the club with a 4th overall pick in this year's draft.

With a foundation in place, the winning can begin immediately with some shrewd deals and draft picks. "This is a long-term project for me. I believe building a Snipers Cup calibre team takes time and there will be many decisions, some lengthy, that will be made over the course of time," Smith said. "I plan on making the Swordsmen better for the upcoming season, but the long-term goal is to make this team a institution in the SCHL and perennial contender."

GM Smith will try to live up to his hype and prove to all that the sword is mightier.

Welcome to the SCHL!

No More Horses-ing Around
May 23, 2010

After 12 years, it has finally happened.   An agreement has been reached to sell the Tarpan Horses to the man known as the SCHL's version of Jim Ballsille: Wade Smith.

"Buying the Horses and joining the SCHL is...well,  a dream come true," Smith laughed as he addressed reporters in Langley. "When I first heard about the SCHL back in 2006, I knew I wanted to get into the league one day.  The opportunity came up and I thought if I don't take this chance now, I'll regret it later."  Wade's chance had come up earlier 2007 when Jason Griffiths left the SCHL.  During the final negotiations, the SCHL determined Wade would have to wait as an aggressive sales tactics was too much for the Commish.  In the meantime, however, Wade has gone on to create his own league called the Linden Cup.  It just finished its inaugural season.  It's simply not enough for Smith.  He knows his hockey, has Center Ice and attends loads of Canucks games.  He's a genuine nerd and will bring a lot of game to the SCHL.  "They don't need to worry" Smith replies when asked about his commitment to the SCHL in relation to his league, "nothing can be compared to the SCHL.  I just spent hard money for piece of the internet.  How mad is that?!" His team name and logo will be released in the coming days/weeks.

The transaction got official approval from the SCHL Board of Governor:  the commish. "Wade was no brainer to approve as member of the SCHL", said Blake Johnston, "I wish it wasn't the Horses selling, however.  There's certainly a long list of teams I'd rather see sold first."

Chris Roy had a private auction with two other suitors throughout the week.  Wade won.

"This wasn't an easy decision." Roy commented. "It's been 12 years, 11 seasons, trades, posts - the time I've had, the drafts.  It wasn't easy to make this call.  But when I saw the SCHL bursting at its seams to add another GM, I thought that maybe it was time I step aside.  My focus has turned to my league, which I started with my friends in 2005.  To be honest, I started that and never thought it'd get wings like it has.  So here we are."

Tarpan, as he's known, leaves the SCHL as an institution.  He's helped shape the league, he's ran it and he's been an integral part of it from day 1.  The SCHL was created back in 1998 in the old EA building on Still Creek Drive, over many late night OT shifts, fuse ball and bubble hockey battles.  Many pointless arguments over rules, roster sizes and other stuff was hammered out there and Tarpan was a founding member in it all.  If he wasn't wearing a Avalanche jersey, it was a Pens jersey or a Nucks sweater.  "You don't create a league like this on your own...Chris was a core guy from day 1"  said Commissionaire Blake Johnston. "I gotta say it's tough losing a GM like this who's had so much impact on the league.  A former assistant Commish and the only guy I trusted to run the league when I went away for a year in 2000.  I just hope I'm not losing a friend here too."

During 2000, Tarpan did a admirable job running the SCHL.  He ran the site, did the stats and brought in a bunch of new cool features.  A lot of guys around now would have appreciated.  Not many trust worthy guys would have stepped up and Tarpan did without any hesitation.

Tarpan was the first Heske of the SCHL.  He was the real first Frank.  Doing his research, his posting, his write-ups and his participation.  So it's only fitting that Heske got his start under Tarpan during the 2005-2006 season.  Tarpan even had a dedicated Tarpan Horses team page off the SCHL site.  It detailed his wins, rosters and history.  It was truly nerdy and amazing.

Tarpan has always taken a liken to the SCHL rules.  If he wasn't opining on someone else's rule idea, he was making one of his own.  He was always looking for creative new ways to increase the fun or iron out ways to better the league.  Something more GMs should be doing.  He hosted the draft in 2007 and has led the all time post count at 30,000. "You are Tarpan!" was coined for a reason.

On the team side of the SCHL, the Horses had limited success during their tenure.  Their greatest season came back in 2000 when they led the WG race for much of the season, but were passed in the very, very late stages by the Bullets for the WG Crown.  After that the Horses went up and down like a yo-yo, winning the Most Improved Award in 2000 & 2003.  The Horses weren't able to have any post season success as they weren't able to win one match in 5 post season appearances.

Other great Horses memories include the monster trade at the 2001 draft getting Mario Lemieux.  Once Mario returned to the NHL, the draft was amped up with him available.  Tarpan was not to let the Big Guy slip as he was his co-favourite player growing up.  Tarpan dealt Chris Drury and Sandis Ozolinsh for the 1st overall pick.  And that trade trumped all the great dealings of the Ferrari Flash that draft.  The Horses were also responsible for dealing Brodeur to the Kilts in 1998.  Damn you Chris!  The paint wasn't even dry on the inaugural SCHL season and the Horses had made two monster deals with in the 1st two weeks!  The Horses are second all time in trades with 85.

If we weren't talking rules or stats you'd hear "Oh Kaberle" from Tarps around the skus at EA or you might hear another Tkachuk vs Shanny argument with Jared.  There are miles of memories, too much to recall.

Success wasn't Tarpan's forte, but you knew he loved it and brought a lot of fun to everyone else in the league. "It's tough to lose another original.  There's not many of us left to recall all the old days.  As I read this, I wish maybe...mmm he'd rethink the sale?" the Commish noted in the press conference. "He's an institution and he'll always have account on the MB and I hope he doesn't forget about us. You had to know the classic Tarpan to understand this loss.  Late night trade talks, posting and constant ponitless banter.  It was great.  I'd kill for some guys to half the GM he was.  I appreciate he manned up and thought hey maybe someone else who's craving this more wants a chance.  I wish a few others would have stones to do that.  But I can't lie, the SCHL won't be the same without him.  When the Barbours left, no one really cared, this will be different."

The Horses leave the SCHL with two division titles, two Most Improved Awards, one of the best logos in SCHL history and, if you look under the Horses team page it says their fav part of the SCHL is: "The Legacy"...well they've certainly left with a legacy only few teams can match.  Needless to say, Mr. Smith has some monster shoes to fill.

A Fresh Coat
May 21, 2010

For two teams, it's time for a change.  The Gryphons have spent the last 11 seasons playing under the same old, grainy, scanned picture, logo.  Finally the Gryphons have got their act together and they have a new logo.  It's a needed change.  The second team to unveil a new logo is the Diamantakos Spartans.  "We're not a playful expansion team anymore.  It's clear we can't hind behind that label any longer.  This logo represents a cleaner, focussed and serious look." Unlike the Gryphons, the Spartans keep their yellow and baby-blue colours.

Commish's Choice

As voted on by his peer's, Ryan Hesketh captured his second Commish's Choice award for his hard-work and dedication in making the SCHL the greatest hockey league on earth.  Heske's season preview topped 30 pages, constant banter, strong opinions in league happenings and his willingness to make the SCHL a better place won him the award this year.  He's also hosted many Saturday night hockey viewing parties  And let's not forget about his podcast chat with Dobber....definitely! He's known as the SCHL Insider.

So from the SCHL, Thanks Heske!

Bobby Mac

As voted on by his peer's, Lorne Wilson wins the inaugural Bobby Mac award, given to the GM who exemplified the merits of making their team better throughout the current season.  Draft Day can only be characterized as a home run.  The Bullets picked the odds on favourite for the SOTD and Pat Roy winner, Tyler Myers 40th overall (Thanks Ash). Started in 17 weeks and with 58 points on the year Rene Bourque (69th) and  finally, the Bullets nabbed Craig Anderson 69th, who scored 100 points this year.  On the trade front the Bullets acquired a full pick for Ville Koistenen and picked up Rafalski from the Shrubdogs.  One of three teams to improve on last year's total by over 50 points

Derek Day

After taking over the Korp/Moth Balls, Day has done nothing but improve this franchise.  The Express set themselves up for a promising future, by drafting future in prospects Schroeder, Benn and Colborne.  They JR'd the Brahmas, sending drop Bumberger to them for Zidlicky.  Took advantage of a little child moving MAB to the Devils for a second rounder and acquiring a more valuable Vizzo for Antropov...all in the offseason last year.  During the season, they didn't get over zealous and moved Stevey Sullivan for a 2011 first from the Kilts.  Their fortunate season and F4 finish was only gravy.

Blake Johnston

Johnston has built the four time WG champs success is mostly built on past moves in previous seasons.  But that does not take away from a great 2009-2010 campaign.  Draft Day, for the most part, was largely mediocre.  The addition of grade A prospect Kulikov is great for the future.  The Tycoons  won the WG this year despite injuries to: Kronwall, Souray, Markov, Hemsky and Ovechkin.  To plug holes in their damn, the Tycoons brought in Andy Mac (1st in 2011), Poni (3rd in 2010) and Laich (4th in 2010).  In the end, the Tycoons won the WG by a mere 11 points and their additions totalled 82 points.  Moreover, last summer the Tycoons acquired first round picks  for Thomas and Lucic.

Lorne Wilson

You had to expect GM Wilson to be a nominee because how much of an impact his the current season had on his championship. One of three teams to improve on last year's total by over 50 points.  Win now and future later.  Nice.

Rick Barrett

It's funny what having a decent team will do to a guy.  After a drought in past seasons on the participation front, Barrett has returned.  His weekly predictions became a feature of the SCHL.  Barrett was also posting, returning trade PMs quicker than normal and his overall posting was up.  He's always got an opinion on league rules and other happenings.  His actions haven't gone unnoticed according to the voting.

Peter Diamantakos

Despite not making a Draft Day appearance since 2006, Pistol Pete leaves the SCHL wanting more.  His annual 'Most Influential GMs' list is a fav, along with his mid season review, his All Snipe Team and he also wrote the lengthy 2008-2009 season review.  Something most of you will appreciate years from now looking back on the season.  On top of that, GMs have recognized his intelligent posting (one Pete post = 50 Daryl posts) and his pragmatic view on league rule changes.  Pete has really taken ownership in the SCHL and he participates in all facets of the SCHL and always on top of his team.

Ryan Hesketh

Frank is at it again.  Season previews topping 30 pages, constant banter and always has a strong opinion in league happenings.  Heske takes the SCHL to heart.  While at time Heske can be abrasive (who isn't tho in the SCHL?), he always means well and it always up for a lengthy midnight SCHL chat.  He's hosted many a Saturday night hockey viewing parties, and is a go to guy for league gossip.  He's always brainstorming ways to improve the SCHL, with new GMs or rule changes.  And let's not forget about his podcast chat with Dobber....definitely! He's known as the SCHL Insider.

April 27, 2010 - For the last 12 years, Draft Day has been the pinnacle of the SCHL.  It has been hosted by nine different GMs, with two multi hosts over 11 unbelievable drafts at locations spread out all across the Lowermainland of British Columbia.  Draft Day is home to some of the SCHL's greatest memories:  Pivonaka, Man in the Mirror, My Documents and much more.  And it has forever changed the face of hockey pools.  Now the SCHL heads back to its original roots of Langley, as 22 GM converge to lay the further ground work for a building team, to build up an already fantastic team or to begin the process of gutting for a rebuilding team.  The SCHL is proud to announce the Goldminers as the host of the 12th SCHL Draft on Saturday, September 25, 2010.  Who will make history this year?

Award Time
April 20, 2010

As discussed earlier in the season we've decided to create the Bobby Mac Award.  It will be defined in the SCHL rules as:

Bobby Mac Award
Voted upon by the GM’s in the SCHL.  The winner of this award exemplified the merits of making their team better throughout the current season [mid-June to the end of the SCHL season], and includes both Cup contenders and rebuilding teams, and every team in between. A culmination of factors is to be considered including: drafting, trading, success of the team [both currently and relatively over the previous season(s)], and the model of the team moving forward. This award does not necessarily have to be awarded to the Snipers Cup champion nor the Most Improved team, nor is it to be confused with the Commish’s Choice Award [which factors in overall contribution to the pool].  It can also include smart moves made by a team deciding to rebuild or change directions with their team.

Each GM will rank three GMs in order with the first GM being awarded 5 points, the second GM awarded 3 points and the third GM awarded 1 point.  The GM with the most points from out of all 22 GMs votes will win the award.

Teams are not allowed to vote for themselves and any ridiculous unrealistic votes will be throw out.

Basically at the end of the day you're voting for the best GM in the current season.  This is strictly their GM moves this year (draftin, trading, subbing..etc) and not their contributions to the SCHL.  Take it seriously and take your time voting and don't take the piss.  Email your votes to blakejohnston@gmail.com when you've fully made up your mind.  Don't rush it though.

In a new twist this season, the Commish's Choice Award will also be voted on.  In previous seasons the Commissionaire selected the winner and while it was a nice award to win, it will carry more weight being selected from your peers.  In contrast to the Bobby Mac Award, GMs will vote for their choice for the GM who they thought most contributed most to the SCHL.  This is in terms of funness, write-ups, participation, great posts..etc.  Just an overall great guy who you think added the most to the SCHL's experience in that current year.  This does not include their actual GMing skills.  You guys know what it's all about.  The award's name will remain the same, but now you'll get a chance to vote.

Each GM will rank three GMs in order with the first GM being awarded 5 points, the second GM awarded 3 points and the third GM awarded 1 point.  The GM with the most points from out of all 22 GMs votes will win the award.

Teams are not allowed to vote for themselves or the Commissionaire and any ridiculous unrealistic votes will be throw out.

Take it seriously and take your time voting and don't take the piss.  Email your votes to blakejohnston@gmail.com when you've fully made up your mind.  Don't rush it though.

2010 SCHL Draft Lottery
April 16, 2010 - Time to kick off the 2010-2011 season with the annual SCHL Draft Lottery.  There's really not much to say, everyone knows the rules and what's at stake...so enjoy.
