The 5th Round Open is the SCHL's Annual golf classic.  It was started in the summer of 2008 and was dubbed the '5th Round Open' after some joked the winning team would win a 5th round pick in the upcoming SCHL Draft.  After plenty of arm twisting, three groups were assembled for the 2008 tourney.  After some debate, we decided to go with a Texas Scramble format to include all of the beginners golfers.  The particapting teams battle for the Norman Jug.  Named after golf great, Greg Norman.

2010 Winners: (Left to Right) Mike Kelly, Daryl Sampson, Ryan Paik, Blake Johnston - (-3)
June 27, 2010 -
The final two groups led by Jamie Wahl and Blake Johnston provided the fire works for the tourney.  Team Sage, led by Blake Johnston, was anchored by their captain, led off the tee by Sampson's drives, Mgelly's touch and arguable greatest moment in SCHL history on the 18th hole, by Ryan Paik.

With the score all knotted up at -2, Team Sage came to long par 5 18th, and with the gallery looking on Ryan Paik (who's only three shots taken TOTAL were his mandatory drives) stepped up and threw a 125 yard iron to 12 feet on a uphill green.  "I couldn't believe it...I just wanted to get it in the air...and then that.  Wow" Paik said.  No one got closer and Paik's shot put the team with one putt away from the title....it was a 12-15 foot downhill side breaker.  After figuring out a minus -2 score would only leave the group tied and that this putt was for the win..the intensity picked up.  Paik was first to act, as always this day, and promptly sunk the putt, sending Sage into a frenzy.  "I seriously can't get over how that all played out" Sampson noted.. "He hadn't done anything all day and with everyone watching he got up and down from 125 yards."  Even Paik was having a hard time containing his smile.

2009 Winners: (Left to Right) Tanner Rattray, Nathan Bellamy and not shown Daryl's Sampson (Pam'd) - (-3)
July 21, 2009 - There was no magical moment on 18 this time around.  Instead the final group was trying to sink a 30 foot par putt and ended up with a bogey to drop back to even par.  That left the three groups tied at -3 going to the tie break.  The group led by Nathan Bellamy, who only had 3 members, had the tie break with 6 birdies.  No one thought a winning score of -3 would take it, let alone three groups all with -3.  "We thought for sure our score was taking it" said team captain Tony Roy, "to find out as we walked up the first group did it...we were surprised.  I guess conditions today were good for scoring."

Rattray and Bellamy hoisted the Norman back back at Nathan's place over a tasty barby.  The day turned out fantastic.  After a mess of people dropping out, it was looking like patch work Perry...but it all came together.  Everyone had a blast and the weather was potent.

2008 Winners: (Left to Right) Tyson Rattray, Sean Moran, Adam Franson, Blake Johnston - (-1)
August 13, 2008 - With everyone watching on the 18th hole, the would be leaders sunk a 10 foot birdie putt for a one under 71 to win the inaugural 5th Round Open at Surrey Golf Course on August 10, 2008.  "I didn't want to miss that one" said captain, Blake Johnston of the winning team. "We battled all day, making long par putts, scrambling.  Everyone chipped in.  Tyson was  throwing those chips tight, Adam with the big drives in the front nine and Sean for those 225 yard 3 irons.  I can't wait to defend the title next year."  The Champions were group 3, the Tycoons, Assassins, Vipers and Shrubdogs.

The day started like it was going to rain, but it the end it was scorching.  All teams played a relatively quick 18 holes.  The group lead by Nathan Bellamy got off to a hot start and was -2 after three holes.  "Things were looking good for us.  The chest bumps were a plenty." remarked Nathan Bellamy. "But shit hit the fan on number 6 as we double bogeyed that hole and dropped back to even.  We just never got it back on track."  The other group lead by Lorne Wilson picked up their play on the back nine, but the damage was done on the front.

1) Johnston, Moran, Ty Rattray, Franson 71 (-1)
2) Wilson, Dedrick, Mitchell, Ma 74 (+2)
3) Bellamy, Denroche, Hesketh, Tn Rattray 75 (+3)
